Local Area Facilities

Cape Reinga 90mile beach tours: Many of our visitors are interested in a 90 mile beach/Cape Reinga bus trip – we can make the arrangements for you and arrange a transfer. The bus will either pick you up or drop you off at the camp depending on which way they are going (which in itself is dependent on the tides). We arrange to get you either to the bus in the morning or home from the beach in the afternoon (again it depends on the tides!) Similarly we can recommend and book fishing guides or charters or put you in touch with local horse trekking guides.

Internet:

The camp has wi-fi available.

Shopping:

The camp has a small shop but doesn’t even pretend to do anymore than provide the basics. However there is a very good general store about 5 kms further North. It carries an amazing range of stock including many camping, boating and fishing items. There is also an off licence bottle store, restaurant, and take aways in the same shopping area.

Restaurants & takeaways:

There are three  eating places in the area and meals are also available some nights at the fishing club if you get sick of your own cooking.

Boat ramps:

As can be expected in an area famous for its fishing there are three boat ramps giving all tide access to the harbour. The nearest is right next to the camp and the next one is about 1 km further up the north road at the Houhora Game fishing club and the third about 5k, further north at the Pukenui wharf.

Tavern:

No visit to the far north would be complete without at the very least a drive past the last pup in the country. The Houhora Tavern is 8.5 kms north of the Motorcamp. If you are going up to Cape Reinga its on your right. You have to actually leave the main road to get to the tavern.

Golf  course:

Go about 3 km’s further north and you’ll find the country’s northern most golf club. The Houhora Golf club is an entertaining 9 hole course. We have clubs available for hire at the camp office.
Petrol/Service Station: The local petrol station is just 500 metres further North of Houhora Heads Road.

Fishing club:

The Houhora area is renowned for its fishing so it’s not surprising that one of the major buildings in the area is a fishing club. The club holds regular tournaments and there are great facilities onsite to encourage anglers to stay well into the night telling yarns about the impressive fish they almost landed.

Outdoor Bowls:

Houhora has a local bowls club and its members are always keen to meet bowlers from round the country and have a ‘roll up’’. The Bowling club and tennis courts are only a coupleof hundred metres north of the service station.

Tennis:

Next to the Bowls club are 3 tennis courts … ask at the camp office for details of how to get an entrance key.

Have a great stay!
